April of Acceptance Daily Idea: accept that your ideas of beauty are influenced by others.
We all have our opinions about what makes someone beautiful. And usually those opinions include believing that we are not those things.
For those of you new to this blog, you probably don't know that I'm a neuroscience nerd. I like to look beyond societal influences and media influences to what is actually going on in the brain.
Our brains have so much going on in there that neuroscientists are still discovering. I WAS going to go into the science of attraction and the science of beauty. But I decided that not everyone is interested in that the way that I am.
Part of the process of attraction is built into our DNA, part of it has to do with the symmetry of our physical features, and part of it has to do with media images associated with messages of what beauty is, building neuropathways in your brain.
Societal standards of beauty change. Constantly.
So take a moment to think about what is currently beautiful and attractive and sexy. And ask yourself, will that be the same in 50 years? In 100 years?
What you think is beautiful is influenced by media, your friends, your family, society, and your brain. What you think is NOT beautiful is influenced in the same way.
Be kind,
To yourself too
xo
***NOTE: "acceptance" in the context of my writing is about the belief that all living things are entitled to respect, regardless of their actions and beliefs. "Acceptance" in this context is NOT about being silent, ignoring injustices and self and others, or expecting that we can say something is okay when it isn't. In this context I am referring to the idea that we cannot control what happens around us, we can only control how to respond to those things.
